Lap time versus split time

Every press of Lap records two numbers. The lap time is how long that segment took, measured from the previous Lap press. The split time is the total elapsed time on the clock at the moment you pressed it. A runner doing four 400 m repeats who presses Lap at 1:32.40, 3:05.10, 4:36.95 and 6:10.20 ran laps of 1:32.40, 1:32.70, 1:31.85 and 1:33.25.

  • Use lap times to compare effort between repeats, sets or presentation sections.
  • Use split times when you need to know where you were against a total target, such as a 25-minute talk or a race pace plan.
  • Fastest and slowest are marked once you have two or more laps; ties go to the earlier lap.

How accurate is a browser stopwatch?

The stopwatch reads a monotonic high-resolution clock (performance.now) and subtracts the start reading, rather than counting timer ticks. The display refreshes about 30 times a second, but the recorded value is exact to the millisecond when you press Stop or Lap, so a slow screen refresh never adds error to the result. Paused time is not counted: Stop saves the elapsed total and Resume starts a new segment.

  • Human reaction time is the biggest error source. Hand timing is typically 0.1 to 0.25 seconds slower than electronic timing, which is why official athletics results distinguish hand-timed marks.
  • Background tabs may slow the on-screen refresh to save power, but the elapsed time is still correct when you return.
  • Hundredths are truncated, not rounded, so 59.999 seconds shows as 00:59.99, never 01:00.00.

Keyboard shortcuts and exporting laps

Press Space to start or stop, L to record a lap and R to reset. Shortcuts are ignored while focus is in a text field or on a button, so a focused button responds to its own click instead of firing twice.

Export CSV downloads a file with the lap number, lap time, split time and both values in milliseconds. The millisecond columns are plain numbers, so a spreadsheet can average laps, chart pacing or compute the spread between the fastest and slowest repeat without re-typing anything.

Practical uses

  • Interval training: record each repeat and export the session to track pace over weeks.
  • Speeches and rehearsals: press Lap at each section change to see which part runs long.
  • Lab and classroom timing: reaction experiments, pendulum periods (time 10 swings and divide by 10 to reduce reaction error) and chemistry reactions.
  • Work sampling: time repeated tasks to estimate a realistic standard time.

For counting down to zero instead of counting up, use a countdown timer; a stopwatch measures how long something took.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the Online Stopwatch with Laps & Split Export

A lap is the time since the previous Lap press. A split is the total elapsed time when you pressed Lap. With laps at 1:32.40 and 3:05.10 total, the second lap time is 1:32.70 and its split is 3:05.10.
