The rules behind each region's clock change

Daylight saving time dates follow a fixed weekday rule in each region, so the calendar date moves every year while the pattern stays the same. In the United States the Energy Policy Act of 2005 set the current schedule, used since 2007: clocks go forward at 2:00 AM local time on the second Sunday in March and back at 2:00 AM on the first Sunday in November. In 2026 that is March 8 and November 1; in 2027 it is March 14 and November 7.

  • European Union and United Kingdom: the last Sunday in March and the last Sunday in October, at 01:00 UTC in every country at the same moment. In 2026 that is March 29 and October 25.
  • Southeastern Australia: clocks go back on the first Sunday in April and forward on the first Sunday in October. In 2026 that is April 5 and October 4.
  • New Zealand: back on the first Sunday in April, forward on the last Sunday in September (September 27, 2026).

Places that never change their clocks

Not everyone inside a region follows the rule. In the United States, Hawaii and most of Arizona stay on standard time all year, as do Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The Navajo Nation in northeastern Arizona does observe daylight saving time. In Australia, Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory do not change their clocks, and most of Asia, Africa and South America has no daylight saving time at all.

The any-time-zone mode handles these exceptions automatically. Choose America/Phoenix, Pacific/Honolulu or Asia/Tokyo and the tool reports that the zone keeps one UTC offset for the whole year instead of inventing a transition.

How the any-time-zone mode finds the change

For a single IANA time zone the tool does not rely on a hard-coded rule. It asks your browser's built-in time zone database for the zone's UTC offset every six hours across the year, and when the offset changes it narrows the moment down to the exact minute with a binary search. For America/New_York in 2026 that finds 07:00 UTC on March 8, when 2:00 AM EST becomes 3:00 AM EDT, and 06:00 UTC on November 1.

  • Offsets that are not whole hours are shown exactly, such as Lord Howe Island's 30-minute shift or Chatham Islands time at UTC+12:45.
  • Government changes such as a country abolishing daylight saving time are picked up as soon as your browser's time zone data includes them.

Avoiding mistakes around the change

The hour that disappears in spring and the hour that repeats in autumn cause most scheduling errors. A meeting set for 2:30 AM on the U.S. spring-forward night does not exist, and one set for 1:30 AM on the fall-back night happens twice. Overnight shift workers typically work one hour less in March and one hour more in November, which matters for payroll.

  • Cross-border calls: for about three weeks each March and one week around the end of October, the gap between New York and London is four hours instead of five because the U.S. and Europe change on different Sundays.
  • Phones and computers update automatically, but oven clocks, car clocks and some alarm clocks do not.
  • Southern Hemisphere dates are reversed: daylight saving time in Australia and New Zealand runs from spring (September or October) to autumn (April).
